Description

Height 35-40 m, log 10-18 m, diameter 0.9-1.4 m, up to 2.5 m common.

The heartwood of the red Elm is reddish brown to dark brown, with narrow greyish white to light brown sapwood. The growth rings are very visible due to the large vessels in the early wood, and the wood therefore has a pronounced flame pattern.

Elm is fairly easy to work with. It is used as solid wood and veneer for furniture and panelling.
